The tenth child of a large family, Jack Daniel was born Jasper Newton Daniel around 1850.
Nicknamed "Jack," he left home at an early age (approximately six years old), and learned his craft in whiskey making from Dan Call, a Lutheran preacher. He assumed control of the distillery when he was approximately twelve years old, and in 1866, was the first person to register a distillery with the
United States Government
Jack Daniel died in 1911 and is buried in Lynchburg Cemetary
